Although underappreciated outside Italy, Rosso Conero (pronounced ROHS-soh KOHN-eh-roh) is one of Italy's oldest official appellations and among its most noble (it was established in 1967, the same year as Brunello di Montalcino, the very first DOC). Made with the Montepulciano grape and small amounts of Sangiovese, it can have a remarkably bright, ruby color, hence the name Enzo Mecella gives to his top wine, Rubelliano.
