The small, family-owned Carobbio estate is located in the heart of Chianti Classico in the township of Panzano, the highest point in the appellation. It is surrounded by some of Chianti's most famous producers: its vineyards lie adjacent to those of the Castello dei Rampolla (one of Italy's most famous ). Altitude is key here: for Carobbio and its neighborhoods, the cooler evening temperature is essential in creating potent, long-lived wines. At Vino, we like Carobbio partly because we always like an underdog (the small estate is wedged in between some of Italy's most powerful names). But what really attracts us to its wines is that they believe in terroir expression and varietal characteristics. While its Chianti is true to tradition, they also make some of our favorite Super Tuscans. Carobbio represents a nearly perfect equilibrium between modern and traditional winemaking and produces a balanced range of classic and "trophy" wines.
Carobbio's Chianti Classico Riserva is made exclusively from fruit grown in the winery's highest vineyards (while the regular Chianti Classico is made from fruit grown at lower-lying sites). The temperature variation (warm days/cool evenings) allows the grapes to ripen more slowly and as a result, the fruit's tannin is more developed and powerful. Like the regular Chianti, this wine is vinified in a gently modern style. Richer than the regular Chianti, try a bottle of this wine and then lay some down in your cellar. Drink over the next 5-10 years.
